OED 2nd Ed v3.0: A Seamless and Updated Version of the Oxford English Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and authoritative dictionary of the English language. It traces the history and evolution of more than 600,000 words over the last 1,500 years, providing definitions, etymologies, pronunciations, and quotations from a vast range of sources.
The OED was originally published in fascicles between 1884 and 1928, and then reprinted as a twelve-volume first edition in 1933. A four-volume supplement was added between 1972 and 1986, containing new words and meanings that had emerged since the completion of the main work. However, these two parts were not fully integrated, and users had to consult both volumes to find the most up-to-date information on a word.
In 1989, a second edition of the OED was published, which merged the twelve volumes and the four-volume supplement into a single text, arranged in twenty evenly sized volumes. This edition also added new vocabulary, made some general and local revisions, and introduced a new typographical format. The second edition was estimated to have affected the majority of the 290,500 entries in the dictionary, making it significantly richer and more modern than its predecessors.
The second edition of the OED was also made available on CD-ROM in 1992, and later online in 2000. The online version allowed for continuous updating and revision of the dictionary, as well as providing additional features such as audio pronunciations, advanced search options, and links to other resources. The online version also introduced a new version number system, starting with OED Online v1.0 in March 2000.
The latest version of the online OED is OED Online v3.0, which was launched in December 2010. This version incorporates the complete text of the second edition of the OED, as well as quarterly updates that add new words and senses, revise existing entries, and extend the historical coverage of the dictionary. OED Online v3.0 also features a redesigned interface, improved functionality, and enhanced integration with other Oxford dictionaries.
OED 2nd Ed v3.0 is therefore a seamless and updated version of the Oxford English Dictionary, which offers users access to the most comprehensive and authoritative record of the English language in a convenient and user-friendly format.
Some of the features that OED Online v3.0 offers to users are:
